Doin’ it for the kids…

Just a quick note to say what a fantastic time I had playing with Contra-Band at Demelza Hospice yesterday.

The event, organised by the fantastic Sharon Harvey, was aimed at bringing the music festival experience right into the heart of Demelza Hospice so that the children could experience all the noise, excitement, and atmosphere of the big gigs that so many others take for granted. The only thing missing was the mud, but there still a lot people giving it some welly!

It’s fair to say it was a humbling and emotional experience, but joyous at the same time. I didn’t know what to expect, but it exceeded my expectations and it was a real privilege playing for some absolutely lovely and wonderful people. It certainly puts a lot of things into perspective when you meet these kids and take the time to talk to them. Inspirational!

I was especially delighted to finally meet Pride in Medway award winner Alec Martin who has a wicked sense of humour, not to mention a great throwing arm.

My thanks go out to all the kids who attended and to all the staff and volunteers who looked after us so well during our visit. It’s something I hope to participate in again.
